Are you one of the many people who dream of owning your own business and being your own boss? Have you been thinking about the online world with its freedom and portability and the worldwide aspect of having an online business?
Business trainer Kim Klaver says it best when she says: “you will need a few shekels and will have to learn a few new skills!” Starting a business, any business, takes an outlay of money and time!
Starting an offline business can certainly take a large outlay of money which discourages some and knocks others out of the game entirely. Starting an online business may not take as much to start up. But it IS a business and it will take time and money if it is to be successful.
There are some options to get started online without spending a small fortune. Affiliate marketing is one of those. People can sell other people’s products and make commission for doing so — maybe even make quite a bit of commission for doing so!
Are they legit? Why would a business use an affiliate program?
Simple. The company doesn’t have to pay unless sales are made. There could be thousands of people with the company information on theirs sites advertising for them, for free, until a sale is made. And what is the best kind of advertising? Word of mouth. One individual telling another about a product, whether they the telling is online or in person … works! Companies offer these programs because they work.
Who offers affiliate programs? You name it! Have you ever heard of places like: Amazon, Godaddy, Walmart, GNC Nutrition, Kohls, BestBuy, LA Fitness or PetMeds? Those are just a few from a random search. You can find affiliate programs in just about any niche.
So yes, you can find that it is possible to make a decent living without having to pay the huge overhead of rent and utilities for a store or office. As long as you remember …. affiliate marketing is a business. You will have to invest some money to make some money. You will have to invest time and energy and more time and will need to work at it.
Much as I hate to be the bearer of bad news, it is likely that you will not get rich overnight.
Now if you’re ready to get to work, here are some useful sites that will help you understand affiliate marketing and how to make it work for you!

Charlie Page is another one of my faves. He has numerous sites, all using his tag Common Sense. I love Charlie. He is the voice of reason in a very cluttered, loud, young world! He has been making a living on line for at least 15 years and has very solid, unassuming, USEFUL advice and help for online marketers.
In this Affiliate Success Checklist, he explains in simple terms how to set yourself AND your affiliate business up for success! And how to set it up to create a full-time income with little overhead or technical skills. Charlie Page says …
“And like any business it must be built on a solid foundation and requires learning a few new skills. With that said let me share with you the checklist I used when starting out …
It’s the same checklist I use today. I am approached every day by people who want me to promote their product or do a joint venture with them. This is the checklist I use to evaluate those requests.” Read more from Charlie Page’s Affiliate Success Checklist here!
Just Charlie’s comments on “cookie duration” and “back-end commissions” alone would save you time and energy and money by the boatload!
By Steve Olenski
Rather than the perspective of an individual considering whether to be an affiliate for a company, Steve writes this for the company considering whether or not an affiliate program would be good for their business. It’s important to take a look at their take on this kind of marketing.
“There are lots of myths out there surrounding affiliate marketing, and these can frequently cause brands/businesses to pass on these kinds of programs. It’s important you understand some of these myths so you can make the correct decisions for the future growth of your business.” Read more on 4 Myths About Affiliate Marketing You Need to Know here!
Steve stresses how important it is for the company to choose affiliates wisely. because their behavior can reflect back on the company.
The same goes for you, when looking for an affiliate opportunity. Make sure it is a company and product that is right for you. Look around on the net. Of course there will be others marketing the same product. Is the opportunity saturated?
How are the other marketers marketing? Are they professional? If there are a lot of spammers marketing the product, even though you are not the spammer, it will reflect back on you, your name and your site. Everyone needs to do their homework!
So there you have it, 3 sites that will give you a great understanding of what affiliate marketing is and some ideas on how you can use affiliate marketing to get your online business going!
